In the Fall of 1988, three young women at Rhodes College decided that they wanted to charter a chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated on Rhodes campus. However, in order to do so seven women were needed. They had friends at Christian Brothers University and asked young women to join them. This would be a core chapter with members on both campuses. Being a core chapter requires a level of sisterhood calling young women to work collectively at two campuses in order to obtain a common goal.
With the dedicated efforts of the Memphis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, steadfast supporters of Rhodes and a year and a half of hard work, their dream became a reality. On February 4, 1990, the chapter was charted by the Southern Regional Director: Dr. Louise A. Rice (now 23rd National President), Lois J.
Gilder and Mildred W. Mitchell.
